MINDA CHAIR SECRETARY ALONTO HIGHLIGHTS TRANSPORT AND CONNECTIVITY COOPERATION IN BRUNEI

Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chair Secretary Datu Hj Abul Khayr Dangcal Alonto led the Philippine delegation to the 22nd BIMP-EAGA Ministerial Meeting (MM) and Related Meetings held at the V-Plaza Hotel in Kuala Belait on 23-26 November 2018. He was joined by Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Abdulgani M. Macatoman as Senior Official and Philippine Embassy Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Pete Raymond V. Delfin during the meetings.

During the Ministerial Meeting, Secretary Alonto underscored the urgency to leverage on recent developments in BIMP-EAGA, particularly in transport and connectivity to strengthen sub-regional cooperation among member countries and other development partners.

The 22nd BIMP-EAGA MM and Related Meetings were jointly organized by Brunei Darussalam’s Ministry of Finance and Economy (MOFE) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah and Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd. Yusof co-chaired the Ministerial Meeting held on November 26.

The 22nd BIMP-EAGA MM discussed BIMP-EAGA’s steadfast economic growth despite recent global economic challenges. The event also cited the progress of BIMP-EAGA cooperation, especially the achievements under the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 (BEV 2025). The other significant discussions focused on economic corridor development as a spatial approach to realize inclusive and sustainable growth in BIMP-EAGA as well as BIMP-EAGA’s strategic role in ASEAN integration and community-building.

Other highlights of the 22nd BIMP-EAGA MM included the BIMP-EAGA National Secretariat Meeting; 27th BIMP-EAGA Senior Officials Meeting (SOM); 12th BIMP-EAGA – China SOM; 5th BIMP-EAGA – Northern Territory of Australia SOM; BIMP-EAGA – Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Senior Officials Consultation Meeting; 1st BIMP-EAGA – China MM; and the BIMP-EAGA Trade and Investment Forum.

CDA Delfin hosted a luncheon for the Philippine delegation at the Tarindak D’Seni restaurant in Bandar Seri Begawan prior to the group’s departure for Manila on 27 November 2018.

The 23rd BIMP-EAGA MM and Related Meetings will be held in Kuching, Sarawak in November 2019. END
