In celebration of National Women’s Month, the Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam conducted a Gender and Development (GAD) forum on “Women’s Rights” and workshop on “Self Defense Techniques” on 23 March 2018 at the Chancery.  It was the Embassy’s second GAD activity for the year.

Ambassador Meynardo LB. Montealegre, in his welcome remarks, highlighted the significant role of women in today’s society and how important it is to know one’s rights especially in a foreign country.

During the forum, Vice Consul Jaybee R. Arguillas discussed the pertinent laws, both in Brunei and in the Philippines, that give protection to women and children against violence and sexual harassment. After the forum, a demonstration of self-defense techniques was exhibited by Tsg. Romelito A. Galeos of the Office of the Defense and Armed Forces Attaché (DAFA), and Mr. Zosimo C. Crodua, Jr., an expert in judo and karate. A short briefing on emergency preparedness by Defense Attache Jose Ricky A. Laniog immediately followed the sessions.

The activity was attended by around fifty (50) Overseas Filipinos (OFs), mostly females.  After the activity, the participants were given tokens of appreciation and were treated to a simple merienda.

The Embassy regularly conducts GAD activities that promote gender and development issues for the benefit of Filipinos in Brunei, particularly for their empowerment and enhanced productivity. END
