Covid-19 cases in Cebu City surge past 1K

CEBU CITY – The city government here on Monday recorded 188 new confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases, bringing the total to 1,090, affecting 32 of the 80 villages.

Mayor Edgardo Labella said of the four places where residents underwent massive testing —Sitio Alaska in Barangay Mambaling recorded 185 cases and Sitio Sto. Niño of Barangay Suba, Sitio Buwaran of Sawang Calero and P. del Rosario of Sambag having one case each.

“Ang pagtaas sa kaso sa Covid-19 resulta sa gipahigayon nga massive testing sa lugar (The sudden surge of Covid-19 cases is the result of massive testing conducted in those places),” Labella said in a statement.

Mambaling village now has 251 positive cases, followed by Barangay Luz where Sitio Zapatera, the first sub-village ordered by Labella to be placed under lockdown with 192 cases, and Labangon and Suba with 125 cases each.

Barangay Guadalupe has 11 cases, followed by Inayawan with five cases while Carreta, Lahug and Sambag 2 have four cases each.
Talamban and Calamba have three cases each, while eight barangays have two cases each and 11 other villages with one case each.
The Cebu City Health Department (CCHD) recorded one case that has an unverified detail.

However, Cebu City Jail is on top of the list with 332 coronavirus cases as of Monday.

Labella ordered the transfer of residents tested as coronavirus-positive but asymptomatic to the Barangay Isolation Center (BIC).

“Samtang anaa sa BIC, monitoron sa Cebu City Health Department ang tanang mga gi-isolate nga asymptomatic patients kun walay mga gipamati (While in the BIC, the Cebu City Health Department (CCHD) will monitor the conditions of asymptomatic patients even if they don’t have illness),” he said.

Barangay officials in 80 villages here transformed schools and sports gymnasium in their localities into BICs. As of now, the city government has inventoried 1,400-bed capacity in all BICs in the city.

Also, the city government will utilize the Cebu Sports Center, Cebu City Sports Institute in San Nicolas and the Cebu Coliseum for Covid-19 patients.

Apart from the BIC and the sports facilities, the CCHD likewise identified five cluster clinics where residents who have influenza-like illness and other symptoms of Covid-19 can seek consultation.— By John Rey Saavedra / (PNA)
