PH DELEGATION MEETS WITH OFFICIALS FROM BRUNEI’S AGRICULTURE AND AGRIFOOD DEPARTMENT

Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Pete Raymond V. Delfin of the Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam and members of the Philippine delegation to the 1st Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) for the Philippines-Brunei Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Halal Industry and Halal Export Development and Promotion met with Director Hajah Aidah binti Haji Mohd Hanifah, Senior Special Duty Officers, and Heads of Divisions of Brunei’s Department of Agriculture and Agrifood (DAA) on 11 August 2018. The DAA is under the auspices of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) of Brunei Darussalam.

The main items discussed during the Philippine delegation’s meeting with DAA officials include, among others, the Philippines’ participation in the Brunei Halal Showcase (BruHAS) 2018; convening of the 1st JCM to facilitate the implementation of the Philippines-Brunei MOU on Halal Industry and Halal Export Development and Promotion; status and prospects of the fruits, vegetables, floriculture, poultry, and agrifood industries in Brunei; Halal certification process in Brunei; and initiatives in support of Halal export promotion and joint-venture investment projects in both Brunei and the Philippines, and in the BIMP-EAGA region.

PHL GOLF CLUB IN BRUNEI HOLDS PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR’S CUP

The Pinoy Golfers Around (PiGA), a PHL golf club based in Brunei, in cooperation with the PHL Embassy, organized the “Philippine Ambassador’s Cup” on 19 February 2017 at The Empire Golf and Country Club in Jerudong.

Said golf tournament aimed to foster camaraderie among Brunei government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and Filipino golfers, and to further enhance PHL-Brunei bilateral relations.

Among the Brunei government officials who participated in the golf tournament included Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Laila Raja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Halbi bin Haji Mohammad Yusuf, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports; Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF); Col. Haji Abdul Hadi bin Haji Saim, Chief of Staff, RBAF; and Yang Mulia Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha Pg Metassan, former Brunei Ambassador to the PHL.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps who also joined the tournament included H.E. Amphay Kindavong, Lao Ambassador to Brunei; H.E. Biravij Suwanpradhes, Thai Ambassador to Brunei; and Defense Attachés from the PHL, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore,  and Thailand. PiGA members, headed by PiGA Captain Leovener Gatapia, also played in the tournament.

Following the tournament, awards were given to overall winners of the VIP category (Lt. Col. Daniel Foo from the Singapore High Commission) and the PiGA category (Mr. Leovener Gatapia, PiGA Captain). Trophies showing PHL craftsmanship, i.e., calesa, jeepney, and vinta made of glass, as well as mother of pearls, were awarded to the winners.

During Ambassador Montealegre’s remarks at the awarding ceremony, he highlighted that the golf tournament was one of the activities organized by a FilCom organization in Brunei, in cooperation with the Embassy, to promote the PHL’s ASEAN Chairmanship this year, and to foster friendship and close cooperation between the PHL and Brunei. NATIONAL DEFENSE COLLEGE OF THE PHILIPPINES CONDUCTS STUDY VISIT TO BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Officials and students from the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) undertook a study visit to Brunei Darussalam on 21-24 May 2016, as part of NDCP’s conduct of its Global Security and Development Study (GSDS) for the Masters in National Security Administration (MNSA) Regular Course. The NDCP delegation was headed by Brig. Gen. Fermin R. de Leon, Jr. AFP (Ret), PhD, MNSA, Director IV and President of the NDCP.

During the NDCP’s study tour to Brunei, the delegation was able to visit the Philippine Chancery wherein the group was briefed by Col. Ernest Mark P. Rosal, PA (GSC), the Embassy’s Defense and Armed Forces Attaché, on the overview of Philippines–Brunei Darussalam defense relations. The delegation was also toured around the Chancery for familiarization of the personnel and functions of various sections within the Embassy.

Following the delegation’s tour of the Philippine Chancery, the Ministries and Department that the NDCP delegation visited include the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT); the Energy and Industry Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EIDPMO); the Ministry of Defence (MinDef); the Ministry of Development (MoD); and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MoFAT).

The NDCP delegation’s visits to the aforementioned government offices were productive and generated a holistic and multi-dimensional learning experience for the participants who were familiarized with the opportunities, challenges and prospects which Brunei Darussalam pursue for its politico-security and economic development.

Philippine Ambassador Meynardo LB. Montealegre hosted a high-tea for the delegation at the Ambassador’s official residence on 23 May 2016.

The delegation was very pleased with the outcome of their study tour given the fruitful and productive discussions with officials from the Brunei government offices they visited. They expressed their utmost appreciation to the Philippine Embassy for welcoming them in Brunei and assisting them throughout their study visit.

The GSDS aims to enhance the strategic thinking of NDCP’s students by exposing them to security issues affecting the Philippines. The students will also be given the opportunity to observe the political, economic, socio-cultural, environment, techno-scientific, and military dynamics of ASEAN countries, as they visit academic and government institutions in other ASEAN member-states. For this year’s Regular Course, the NDCP focused on outward visits to ASEAN countries to promote and foster support for the Philippines’ Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2017. END

Philippine Embassy graced the Opening of the 7th ASEAN School Games 2015

The Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Ambassador Meynardo LB. Montealegre, attended the Opening Ceremony of the 7th ASEAN Games 2015 on 22 November 2015 at the Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex.

The ASEAN School Games (ASG) is an annual sporting event which aims to promote the spirit of partnership and equality among ASEAN nations through cooperation in the field of sports and cultural exchanges.

Nine (9) ASEAN member countries participated in the said competition, namely; Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Philippine Delegation was composed of one hundred three (103) participants, seventy seven (77) youth athletes from various regions and twenty six (26) officials from the Department of Education, headed by Director Luz S. Almeda, Regional Director, Department of Education of the National Capital Region (NCR).

Ambassador Montealegre, during the courtesy call of the officials of the Philippine delegation, said that the participation of the youth to friendly competitions plays a vital role in establishing networks and forming friendships with the youth of other nations.

The Philippine contingent garnered a total of three (3) gold medals in female golf, javelin and long jump; three (3) silver medals in triple jump and swimming; and, eleven (11) bronze medals in female golf, badminton and swimming.
