123rd anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal
The Filipino community in Bandar Seri Begawan, spearheaded by the Embassy of the Philippines, commemorated the 123rd anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, at the Embassy grounds along the Diplomatic Enclave.
To mark the event, Ambassador Christopher B. Montero led a wreath-laying ceremony and the unveiling of a new Sentro Rizal signage at the Main Lobby of the Philippine Chancery. This was followed by readings of verses from Dr. Jose Rizal’s popular poems, Sa Aking Kabata and Mi Ultimo Adios, by Kyle Eldrick Vallesfin and Muizzuddin Bahjin, respectively.
In his message, Ambassador Montero highlighted that this day of commemoration is a day of grateful remembrance of Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom so that Filipinos all over the globe may emulate his traits and become willing heroes in their own way. He added that Rizal’s works remain relevant to this day, serving as an inspiration to further foster the Filipino’s love of country and fellowmen, and cooperation towards nation-building and development.
The Sentro Rizal of Brunei was inaugurated in November of 2016 during the time of then Ambassador Meynardo LB Montealegre. It was moved to a more spacious room within the Chancery in September 2019 in order to allow greater functionality, enable more people to be accommodated for SR-related activities, and to serve as centerpiece for collections and materials on Dr. Jose Rizal and for Filipiniana products and cultural materials.
Ambassador Montero encouraged the Filipino community to promote and make use of the Sentro Rizal as a platform for promoting Philippine arts, culture, and language not only to children of overseas Filipinos, but also among Bruneians and other nationalities in Brunei Darussalam.
The event was capped by a fellowship breakfast shared by Filipino Community members in Brunei and Embassy personnel.
